"MesseCity strengthens the right bank of the Rhine"

Interview with the Managing Director

MesseCity Cologne is a joint venture between STRABAG Real Estate, the property developer of the STRABAG Group, and ECE Work & Live. Volker Comelli,  Managing Director of MesseCity Köln at STRABAG, speaks about the major joint project at Deutz railway station.

Mr Comelli, with an investment volume of 750 million euros, MesseCity Köln is one of the largest project developments in Cologne. What is special about this project?

MesseCity is not only a place to work, but also a place for leisure and recreation. With the large outdoor staircase, the pavilion, or the Saint-Lazare building - which houses both office space and retail oriented-space such as L'Osteria - we have succeeded in creating an environment that supports the balance between work and private life in Deutz.

What role does sustainability play in the development concept?

Sustainability is an essential principle of MesseCity Köln. This is reflected in the choice of materials, the energy concept and the design of the public spaces. The buildings fulfill the ESG criteria and have received a gold certification from the German Sustainable Building Council. High social, ecological and energy standards are guaranteed.

What significance does MesseCity have for the city of Cologne?

MesseCity has flagship character for Cologne. It significantly enriches the urban fabric and, with space for several thousand workplaces, it strengthens the right bank of the Rhine as an office location. In the overall concept with the catering facilities, MesseCity is a lively neighbourhood that will only further boost Cologne’s urban flair.
